SPECIAL MEETING
JUNE 19, 2008
7:00 P.M.
The Special Meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Earl Shafer.
Board members present were Earl Shafer, Tena Gleason, Kimberly Slattery, Charles Konrade, Dawn Hayes-Benish and Pat Heeke. Also present were Superintendent Littell, Clerk Judy Konrade and three patrons.
Earl Shafer moved to approve the waiver of notification of a Special Meeting. Charles Konrade seconded the motion. Motion carried 6-0.
Board of Education Position – Candidate Interviews
Tracy Bailey – 7:05 p.m.
Richard Heeke – 7:25 p.m.
Janice Rabe – 7:45 p.m.
Myron Ricke – 8:05 p.m.
Beverly Temaat – 8:25 p.m.
The board recessed 8:48 – 9:00 p.m.
Dawn Hayes Benish moved to appoint Janice Rabe to fill the board position vacated by the resignation of Trisha Offerle. Pat Heeke seconded the motion. Motion failed 2-4.
Charles Konrade moved to appoint Beverly Temaat to fill the board position vacated by the resignation of Trisha Offerle. Kimberly Slattery seconded the motion. Motion carried 4-2.
President Shafer thanked all candidates for their interest in applying for this position. This position will expire June 30, 2009. The position will be listed on the April 2009 ballot for board elections. The individual elected will then fill the unexpired term of the vacated position which will end June 30, 2011.
At this time, Pat Heeke stated, Mr. President, I wish to resign my position on the board. As a member of a board, I know that I must support any decision passed by a majority vote. As an elected official, I cannot support this decision which goes against what the voters expressed overwhelmingly at the last election; therefore I must resign my position. I will continue to support the school district from the other side of the table and hope you all will continue to move in a positive direction.
Pat Heeke left the meeting at 9:10 p.m.
KASB Policy Review
This items was tabled until the July agenda.
Change July Board of Education Meeting Date
Earl Shafer moved that the board change the July 14, 2008 Board of Education meeting date to July 2, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Kimberly Slattery seconded the motion. Motion carried 5-0.
Kitchen, Lunchroom, Weight Room, Bandroom Roof Bids
Due to a price increase, Davis Roofing withdrew their bid. It was the consensus of the board to attempt to negotiate a competitive price with the next lowest bidder. If this fails then reopen the bidding process regarding roof bids for the kitchen, lunchroom, weight room and bandroom.
Approval of June Expenditures
Charles Konrade moved to approve June final expenditures. Dawn Hayes-Benish seconded the motion. Motion carried 5-0.
Approval of June Minutes Upon Publication
Earl Shafer moved to approve the June minutes upon publication. Kimberly Slattery seconded the motion. Motion carried 5-0.
Approve Motion to Dissolve Committees No Longer Active
Dawn Hayes-Benish moved to dissolve committees no longer active. Charles Konrade seconded the motion. Motion carried 5-0.
Approval of Transfers
Dawn Hayes-Benish moved to approve end of year transfers. Tena Gleason seconded the motion. Motion carried 5-0.
Negotiations
Tabled until Item #13 – approval of contracts.
School Calendar
Dawn Hayes-Benish moved to change the teacher contract days for the 2008-2009 school year from 189 days to 184 days with an addition of 12 minutes added to the contract days. Kimberly seconded the motion. Motion carried 5-0.
Approval of Contract
Kimberly Slattery moved to ratify the negotiated agreement with the Spearville Teachers Association. Tena Gleason seconded the motion. Motion carried 5-0.
Charles Konrade moved to approve Theresa Brake as Fifth Grade teacher. Tena Gleason seconded the motion. Motion carried 5-0.
The board was informed that Mark Sanko has been hired as custodian for the Middle School/High School.
July Summer Hours
Superintendent Littell reported that in an effort to conserve energy and reduce costs, he will be changing the District Office and Custodial summer hours for the month of July. The hours will be from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with all school buildings closed on Friday’s.
President Shafer adjourned the meeting at 9:40 p.m.
