This date is different than what is reflected on our printed calendar.

After School Program Pick Up Information:

Attendance and Chronic-Absenteeism

The Kansas Education System of Accreditation (KESA) requires school districts to set goals for areas of improvement in their schools. Reports that provide data supporting the strategies used by a district must be submitted for review by the KESA department at the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE).

According to the Kansas Department of Education’s 2021 Fact Sheet on Chronic Absenteeism, “The Chronic-Absenteeism rate, which now must be reported, is the percentage of students in a school that miss more than 10 percent of the instructional time for any reason, excused or unexcused.” (www.ksde.org – Attendance and Absenteeism Webpage)  KSDE also provides whole school strategies to improve student attendance, one of them being school-wide attendance incentives.

At the January 3rd (2022) Spearville Middle School and High School faculty/staff meeting it was decided to try a school-wide incentive to improve attendance rates and decrease chronic absenteeism. The faculty/staff agreed to implement the incentive of opting out of semester finals (an idea that has been used by many districts across the state). The faculty/staff discussed and agreed upon the criteria for this incentive.

On January 4th (2022), the first day of the spring semester, Mr. Rueb called an all school assembly at which he shared the incentive with all MS/HS students. Here is the criteria and reward that he shared at the assembly:

MS/HS Student Criteria:

  • Maintain at least an 80% semester average in your class

  • Five or fewer absences per class per semester (no unexcused)

  • No more than three tardies per class per semester

HS Reward:

  • Exempt from final exams for any class where criteria is met

  • Do not have to attend those classes where the criteria is met

  • You have the option to take the final exam to improve your grade. Taking the exam would not harm your average only if you are exempt.

  • Dates for finals for seniors are May 9th and 10th. Dates for finals for underclassmen are May 17th and 18th.

MS Reward:

  • Exempt from final exams for any class where all criteria is met.

  • For MS students, if you are exempt from a final exam, you will have alternative school activities to participate in during the class where criteria is met.

  • You have the option to take the final exam to improve your grade. Taking the exam would not harm your average only if you are exempt.

  • Dates for final exams are May 17th and 18th.

As a result of this incentive, Spearville MS/HS saw a reduction in the number of students who were considered chronically absent (by the KSDE definition).

School has been canceled for today, Tuesday, March 22nd.

There will be a 2 hr late start Tuesday, March 22nd.  No AM PreK and no breakfast will be served.

On Wednesday, March 23rd, Spearville schools will be hosting Kirk Smalley with the Stand for the Silent Organization.  He will be here to speak with our middle school and high school students that afternoon at 1:30.  There will be another presentation at 4:30 that is open to parents and community members.  Kirk will be speaking in the main high school gym for both sessions.  We are extremely fortunate to have him visit our community.  He will be addressing bullying, what it looks like, how students can respond to it, how it impacts its victims, and tips to help parents recognize and deal with students who are bullying and being bullied.  Please make plans to attend – it is a great message all of us need to hear.  Thank you for supporting our school and our students!

There will be a 2 hr late start and no morning Pre-K for Thursday, Feb. 3rd.

Due to the meteorologist predictions of the snow amounts for tomorrow and no indication of change, we will not have school for tomorrow Feb. 2nd.  There will be no school or school activities.

This is a reminder of the sportsmanship expectations here at Spearville schools.  It is expected that all fans will treat players, coaches, and officials with dignity and respect.  Yelling at or swearing at officials and making inappropriate remarks towards players or coaches will not be tolerated at any of our events, whether we are the hosts or the visitors.  Per KSHSAA, any individual (coach, player, administrator, or fan) who is removed from a game for this type of behavior will also be suspended from the next game.  It will also be a requirement of Spearville schools that any individual removed from a game will need to complete the Sportsmanship class through NFHS Learning and present that certificate to Mr. Rueb in order to regain the privilege of attending school sponsored activities.  If a fan is removed for a second time from a game, the fan will be banned from attending school activities for one calendar year.  We are a family community; therefore, we must remember that our students are always watching and we need to model appropriate behavior for all students.  School sponsored activities are designed to enhance the educational opportunities for the children of our community, and while it is nice to win, the main goal of activities is to support the development of our students.  Thank you for your support and cooperation on this.

Spirit Week Themes for the week of Jan. 31st - Feb. 3rd

Next week is Red Ribbon Week for our elementary students. As a reminder regarding Thursday's dress up theme, we ask that students are easily able to use the restroom themselves and that their costume in no way impedes their ability to do so.

Due to a recent increase in COVID cases and quarantines, there will be a mask mandate in place for all players and fans attending the league tournament on Saturday, Oct. 16th.  Players will not have to wear a mask while they are competing.  Fans must wear a mask at all times while in the building.  Refusal to wear a mask will result in you being asked to leave the tournament.  Please respect the wishes of the league and Kiowa County to help keep our students, schools, and communities safe.  Thank you.

The high school cross country meet has been rescheduled. The runners will now travel to Ness City today, Oct. 14th, with the first run beginning at 4:30pm.

This message is to inform parents of a few items regarding our trip to Hickory Hollow Pumpkin Patch, tomorrow, Oct. 13th, as well as new protocol regarding our elementary bldg.

First, we ask that parents please check your child’s folder for a permission form for the Pumpkin Patch.  This needs to be signed and returned in the morning in order for your child to attend the event.  We also ask that your students wear appropriate clothing for the weather.  This being pants, a jacket/coat, and a pair of shoes conducive for muddy conditions.  You are welcome to send an extra pair of shoes with your child to change into once they return to school if you would like.

Finally, we would like to inform parents that we now have our locking system installed throughout our building.  Therefore, the school will be locked down throughout the school day for the safety of all our students and staff.  Students will be trained on the importance of only adults being the ones allowed to open doors for any individuals waiting outside. This includes their own family.  Our buzzing system will be located to the right of the entrance doors for those needing access to the school during school hours.  The protocol for our after school program will stay the same.

Commons Area: Should your child be in the commons area, please call 385-6322.  This number rings directly into the commons area for the program coordinator to know you are in front and ready for pick up and they will send your child out the front entrance door. Safety of students requires all doors to the school to be locked. A phone call will be the only way to notify staff that you are present.  Due to schedule changes, etc. it might be best practice to contact this room first.  If no answer, then pull around to the back.

Play Ground: Should your child be on the playground, you may use the alley for pick up.

This evening, August 10th we will have 6th Grade and new student orientation beginning at 6:00pm in the high school commons.  Students will have an opportunity to hear about expectations and follow their schedule to find all of their classrooms.  At 7:00 this evening, we will have our fall sports parent meeting.  This meeting will begin in the HS commons before we break out into separate rooms for specific sports.  It is also worth mentioning that our BOE approved JH Cross Country last night.  Therefore, if any students JH and HS wish to participate in cross country, your parent meeting will be held tonight as well.

On Thursday, August 12th, we will have our first day of school.  The first day is a half day with us dismissing students at 11:30. MS/HS students who will be participating in sports will need to stay after school so that we can conduct our SWAY testing with all of our athletes.  We will serve these students lunch that day.  Prior to testing, we ask students to download the SWAY app.

HS football players will check out pads after SWAY testing has been completed.  JH football players will check out pads after school on Friday.  If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Rueb via email at kevinr@usd381.org.

6th Grade & New Student Orientation

Orientation will be held at the high school on Aug. 10th @ 6pm for all 6th grade students and any new students entering grades 7th-12th.

Elementary Students

We are working hard to prepare for your return.  Due to unforeseen delays with the construction of our new elementary building, the following changes are taking place:

  • Pre-K AND Kindergarten's first day of school will be Monday, August 16th
  • Elementary Open House will be temporarily postponed
  • Please keep school supplies at home until notified
  • Backpacks are the only item needed at this time

Continue to check here for updates.  We will keep you informed as more information becomes available.

Pre-K and Kindergarten Parents

Please sign up for the required Ages and Stages Screener for all incoming Pre-K and Kindergarten students.  This screener provides important information on your child's development.  This process requires a parent/legal guardian and your child. This will take approximately 30 minutes to complete and will take place at the high school library on August 12th.  Please sign up HERE to reserve your time slot.
